Eastern red cedar, also known as juniper, Virginian juniper, eastern juniper, and red juniper, belongs to the Cupressaceae or Cypress family. It is a gymnosperm, meaning the tree produces naked seeds without a true fruit. The species is non-flowering.
The bark has a reddish tint and is fairly thin and fibrous. Eastern red cedars can live more than 450 years and may grow 30-40 feet tall.
The tree is dioecious, meaning the male and female reproductive structures are on separate plants. The female trees produce berry-like seeds after fertilizing them with pollen produced in cones on the male trees. The “berries” have a blue-purple tint and a waxy covering; they play a key role in flavoring gin, adding a piney, citrus flavor typically combined with up to six other plants. Read More
