Welcome to the life of the atlas cedar tree! Named after its home, this tree is native to the Atlas Mountains that span Northern Africa – found in the countries of Morocco and Algeria. It was first introduced to the United States in 1845. Sometimes, they are referred to as “blue atlas cedar” for their vibrant blue-green needles, but they are scientifically named Cedrus atlantica. Although they are considered lightwood, atlas cedar trees are strong and stand as a good windbreaker for other plant life. The species is also tolerant of urban areas and air pollution, as well as dry and hot temperatures. Since their introduction, atlas cedars have expanded across the U.S., from the Northeast to Tennessee and west to Iowa. They are also found in Southeast Canada. And of course, we can find them on Rowan University’s campus, located near the historic Hollybush Mansion. Read More

Researcher’s Biography
Israt Jashim
Biological Sciences (2024) and Computing & Informatics (2024)
I am a student who has been intrigued by the study of Biology since science classes in high school. It not only presents me with an insight into human life, but also helps me learn about almost every aspect of the world around me. Through my educational career as a student pursuing a degree in Biology, I was introduced to the world of technology as well. I found that it integrates well with biology, and so I was introduced to biotechnology – making advancements in our world that help improve the health of our planet as well as our own lives.
I am now a double-major at Rowan University, pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences and Computing and Informatics, anticipating graduation in 2024. It has been quite a journey, transitioning from snapping photos of plants to break down their characteristics to learning new programming languages in order to problem solve and create. Currently, I am still researching career paths, interested in biotechnology and bioinformatics, but also software engineering and data science.
